Missions

Opportunities to reach outward and grow inward

The Missions Committee works inspired by the words of our Lord.  Over the past few years, verses of inspiration have been used to help focus the committee’s work as the hands and feet of Jesus.  One of these inspirational verses is:

Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible,
but for God all things are possible.”
(Matthew 19:26, New Revised Standard Version)
The committee has also explored who is my neighbor? as it works to fulfill the commandment to love thy neighbor.
And finally, the committee has considered the words of St. Augustine:

What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like.

Building Ministries – Mission trip opportunities:

First Presbyterian Church Garner has partnered with WARM (Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry, Inc) who helps people be safer in their own homes by mobilizing volunteers to complete urgent repairs and accessibility upgrades. WARM serves low-income homeowners in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender Counties, many of whom are elderly and/or disabled.

Participants need not have building skills, as often work includes cleaning, painting, pruning, and even healing the soul whose home we are working on.  During our trips, we prepare meals together, fellowship, play games, and have devotions on the beach.

Local Building Opportunities

Rebuilding Together of the Triangle provides mission opportunities to help our neighbors. We have worked on a house in southeast Raleigh on a referral from this group. Trim was painted to protect wood frames, and screens were replaced.

Habitat for Humanity built a home in Garner and continues to work in the area, please join us in our support of their efforts.

Garner Area Ministries

Tangible donations have been made on a regular basis through a Dignity Drive for hygiene items; and Stock the Shelves at the food assistance center. Our church also supports this organization financially.

Angel Tree

Our Christmas Angel Tree provides gifts to children at the Oak City Outreach Center. Members grab a tag off the tree and purchase items for the child based on age and gender. Wrapped items are delivered to the center for distribution.

Homeless Outreach

Oak City Outreach Center, a feeding site for homeless in downtown Raleigh has been the recipient of meal items, hygiene kits, hats and mittens provided by our members.

Homeless Outreach Providing Encouragement (HOPE) at Garner United Methodist Church has been a place for our church members to serve lunches on the fifth Saturday of the month, approximately five times a year. Our church has provided two side items and two desserts. Showers are also offered to the guests, and our members have provided support for that activity as well.

Family Promise is an outreach organization that provides emergency resources for homeless families. It is one of the very few programs that provide shelter for men. Many of the men in the program have stories about being refused shelter or being separated from family members because they are a males over twelve years of age. The goal of Family Promise is to keep families together while helping them seek employment with a sustainable income. Churches such as ours act as emergency shelter hosts for one week at a time. During the day the families go to school, work, or the Family Promise Day Center. At night churches provide meals, shelter, and fellowship. Our facilities at FPCOG are set up for hosting up to five families, which is generally 15 -18 people. Each family stays in a Sunday school classroom that is provided with a comfortable set of cots and a pillow for each family member. Volunteer hosts spend the night.

Operation Christmas Child, Samaritan’s Purse

The Missions Committee collects and delivers Operation Christmas Child boxes prepared by our members. Children in war torn and impoverished areas receive these uplifting gifts of love.
