Worship

Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendor.
(Psalm 29:2, New Revised Standard Version)

On Sunday morning we have one worship service, which begins at 11:00 am.  We celebrate the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of each month and during other special services.

Early during each service, we present a “Conversation with the Children” for the pre-school and early elementary school children.  After that conversation, these children have the opportunity to go to class for the remainder of the worship service.  We also provide a nursery for children who are too young to attend church for even a short period of time.

During the service, we greet each other to express our community of Christian love.  We shake each other’s hand – or hug each other, in some cases – and greet each other with “the Lord be with you” and other appropriate salutations.

Prayer is at the heart of worship.  We respond to God in adoration, in confession, in thanksgiving, in supplication, and in self-dedication.  Music has an important role of our worship because singing engages the whole self in prayer.

Another vital component of our worship is reading and proclaiming the Scriptures.  Scripture witnesses to God’s self-revelation.

Before the worship service, Sunday School classes begin at 9:45 am for people of all ages.

Adults have two options for Christian education during this time:

  • A class in the Ogburn classroom, or
  • A class in the New Beginnings classroom.

Click on Find Us for a building layout that shows the location of these classrooms.
Click on The Spire for information on the current subject and curriculum used for each of these classes.

We invite you to visit us on Sunday, to learn with us and to worship with us.

If ice, snow or other conditions make travel too hazardous for the worship service, we post a cancellation or delay announcement on the three local television stations:  Channel 5 WRAL, Channel 11 WTVD, and Channel 17 WNCN.
